WHAT HAPPENED?
The 23-year-old severed ties with the Red Devils on a permanent basis when completing a £27 million ($33m) transfer to France in the summer of 2024. He had spent the campaign immediately prior to that move being made on loan at La Liga outfit Getafe – winning their Player of the Year award during his solitary season in Spain.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
United cashed in on Greenwood when it became apparent that there was no professional future for him in his homeland. He saw allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour dropped in February 2023, but was never welcomed back into the first-team fold at Old Trafford.

Laurens, who works as an English football specialist for , has told After Foot: “He doesn't exist anymore. On the BBC, in the Euroleagues show on European and foreign football, we don't talk about Mason Greenwood. We can talk about Marseille, [Roberto] De Zerbi, [Adrien] Rabiot… People complain, write to the BBC saying: ‘Why are you talking about him? We shouldn't talk about him’.”
